A Quick Physiology Primer
Intense, rapid physical exercise causes the muscles to produce energy anaerobically (i.e. with no oxygen). To produce energy in this state the body uses the anaerobic glycolitic system to create ATP which the muscle cells then use for energy. The anaerobic glycolitic system produces pyruvate and hydrogen ions (H+) which bond together to create lactate. This lactate is removed from the muscle cell to prevent the cell environment from becoming too acidic so exercise can continue. If lactate can’t be cleared quickly then the muscle can’t continue working.
What Does This Have to Do With Recovery?
